From Idea to Impact: How Collaboration Is Powering Nigeria’s Distributed Manufacturing Dream

Engineer Ibrahim Habibu’s journey reflects both the challenges and the promise of collaboration between research institutions and local fabricators in Nigeria. As a Chemical Engineer at the Federal Institute of Industrial Research, Oshodi (FIIRO), and a key stakeholder supporting CONESAM in Kano, Ibrahim long believed that innovative ideas in agricultural machinery could thrive if research institutions worked more closely with local manufacturers. Yet, like many innovators, his early efforts—such as a well-received proposal for a solar dryer machine—failed to receive the financial and institutional backing needed to move from paper to practice. That changed with the introduction of the RISA–KECC project. Through this initiative, Ibrahim actively supported local fabricators to successfully develop and demonstrate an oven dryer combo, marking a turning point where long-held ideas finally found practical expression. His involvement deepened during CONESAM’s workplan development sessions, where open dialogue exposed communication gaps between fabricators and research institutes. Ibrahim’s candid acknowledgment of these gaps, coupled with his commitment to personally support future requests, helped build trust and a clearer pathway for collaboration. The outcome was more than a functional machine—it was a renewed framework for cooperation. The revised CONESAM workplan now emphasizes inclusive expert committees, state-level representation, and stronger use of digital tools such as computer-aided design to improve fabrication quality. Ibrahim reaffirmed FIIRO’s readiness to provide manpower, knowledge exchange, and continuous technical support to CONESAM and local manufacturers. Ultimately, Ibrahim’s story mirrors that of many innovators across Nigeria who are shifting from institutional frustration to collective action. With the strategic backing of the RISA project and partners such as Chemonics, Adam Smith International, FCDO, and Propcom+, CONESAM is positioning itself as a catalyst for sustainable, distributed manufacturing—where collaboration turns overlooked ideas into real, scalable impact.
